Why does "Private Practice Set-up" not feature in our training?
We spend years mastering the art of the therapeutic relationship. We study theory, undergo hours of supervision, and lean into the deepest parts of the human experience. But then, we decide to go into private practice, and suddenly we’re expected to be: An Accountant (HMRC/Revenue) A Data Protection Officer (GDPR/ICO) A Marketing Strategist A Tech Specialist!
It’s overwhelming. It’s isolating. And frankly, it’s not what we signed up for.
This is why I founded 'Creating a Private Practice' (CaPP). Having set-up four private practices over the last fourteen years, in both the UK and Ireland. I have really become familiar with the unique challenges therapists face. I'm also a clinical supervisor passionate about helping other therapists establish their private practices. I believe that success in this field goes beyond clinical skills alone: it is also about having good resources, practical systems and strategies so that you feel professionally equipped to sit, in full presence in the moment, with your client.
The Private Practice Blueprint
I’m currently putting the finishing touches on "The Private Practice Blueprint." Along with a checklist specifically for counsellors and psychotherapists in the UK and Ireland. No 'fluff'—just the legal, financial, and ethical steps you need to move from agency employment to professional autonomy. CaPP covers everything from adherence to best practice as recommended by our professional bodies, like UKCP/ICP, etc. to setting a fee that actually prevents burnout. The CaPP intention is to be your ‘back office’ support so your therapeutic work can run smoothly.

1:1 Mentoring
